Our Story

From Cape Breton to Calgary, Janice Beaton has been catering to our desire for good food, community and culture for over 35 years.

The goal of Janice Beaton Fine Cheese is to create and foster a community of people who appreciate thoughtful, heartfelt food.

  • Born to Love Cheese

    • With small fingers clinging to her Grandmother’s apron, Janice would stretch to get a glimpse of the slowly thickening milk. This is one of her first memories of childhood near the seaside town of Mabou on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. On the farm, cheese was a fundamental part of life. 

  • On a Mission

    • After earning her science degree in Nutrition in 1979, Janice headed west. With a keen interest in shaping community through conversation and good food, she launched her first venture, Caffe Beano – still a legendary Calgary coffee spot after 25 years. 

      In 2000, Janice brought her passion for cheese to another community-focused enterprise: Janice Beaton Fine Cheese (JBFC). Delighting in the introduction of superb artisan cheeses, she began teaching classes, speaking at events and mentoring young cheesemongers. Her work has earned her a honoured place in two of the most prestigious organizations in the world of cheese: La Guilde Internationale des Fromagers and Confrerie des Chevaliers du Taste-Fromage de France.

  • Building a Community

    • One of Janice’s greatest strengths is fostering a sense of community. From the hip coffee culture of Beano, to the strong following for fine cheese, her ‘support-local’ focus and leadership in Calgary’s Slow Food movement have helped develop the neighbourhood’s rich culinary scene. 

      It’s the passion for authentic, quality food that distinguishes JBFC. And that same uncompromising standard makes the gift bags and boxes, and the events planned and catered by Janice, so prized and memorable

  • At the Ranch

    • At the end of the week, Janice always finds The Road Home to husband Bob Chelmick, (host on CKUA radio) and their cabin-in-the-woods. It’s in the country; in the oasis of tranquility and connection, where Janice continues to find inspiration on how to shape the community through a commitment to good food.
